  1. 1924- . US painter, associated with Abstract
  2. Expressionism. In the 1950s and early 1960s
  3. he painted targets, or concentric circles of
  4. colour, in a clean, hard-edged style on
  5. unprimed canvas. His work centred on
  6. geometry, colour, and symmetry. His later
  7. 1960s paintings experimented with the
  8. manipulation of colour vision and
  9. afterimages, pioneering the field of op art.
  10. Noland was born in Asheville, North Carolina.
